A Home Fit for a Gypsy: Decor Tips and Ideas

It’s time to decorate. But you’re struggling because you can’t decide between a super sleek and modern decor, a spicy Mexican adobe, a lavish antebellum ambience or an exotic Moroccan boudoir. So don’t. Gypsyfy (yes, I made up this word) your place—do it all. Who says you can’t get clever and eclectic by room?

Hot in the City Kitchen

While living in a city apartment in New York isn’t possible, bringing the sophisticated feel is. With the multitude of hip restaurants and lounges in a metropolis city like Manhattan, the kitchen would be a good place to pimp out “big city style.” It’s the area of gathering and a centerpiece of the home.

When thinking of the perfect modern kitchen— sleek lines, lots of steel and wood might come to mind. Each item in your room should have a unique story behind it, much like the eccentric people of NYC. Be sure your shelves are impeccably stocked with the latest in kitchenware (like a cuisine stand mixer). Make it posh by adding black satin cabinets alongside stainless steel appliances, granite counters, contemporary lighting (recessed cans on dimmers, island lights or pendants) and wood floors. Or, switch it up— go all white.

*Keep it clean, always.

Moroccan Den

Want to saunter out of your “hot in the city” kitchen and move into a world of vibrant colored walls, jewel-tone fabrics, hand-cut tile, cast-iron furniture and colorful metal lanterns? Begin by covering your walls with lime plaster, which originates in Morocco. Natural colors are mixed into the gray matter, spread smoothly on the walls and is then polished with river stone. It can be non-toxic, eco-friendly and a rewarding DIY project.

Influences of its architecture are found in Moroccan furnishings. Incorporate arches and double doors in your design scheme to replicate an ornate palace. You must pay close attention to detail in your Moroccan den. Use desert colors as the base to vibrant tones in shades of blue, gold, green, orange and red.

Antebellum Dining Room

The American South brings an abundance of Southern charm and hospitality— and you love it. Because you can’t necessarily move to a Savannah or a Greensboro apartment, doesn’t mean you can’t release your inner Southern Belle into the home. This refreshing change of pace offers a chance to channel history through antiques— and embellishments. Hang heavy draperies; think a chunky china cabinet; a large mirror, and if you can get a fireplace in there, you’ll become Belle of the ball. Who cares what ball it is.

*Remember the sweet iced tea.

Mexican Senorita Bathroom

Add some spice into your life with the cha-cha-cha of a sexy senorita bathroom. Its elegance and boldness can liven up any space, especially a place everyone ends up visiting at some point in their stay. Cover the floor with Mexican paver tiles—and adorn the walls, baseboards and mirrors with tile, as well. Add a chunky, intricately carved vanity with a sink that solely sits upon it— and colors, bright colors everywhere. Keep it classy with some bright specialty lighting.

Natural Zen Bedroom

Finally, finish each day in the quiet silence of your tranquil bedroom inspired by the soothing retreats of the ancient healers. A clutter-free environment that evokes feelings of happiness is ideal. Neutral colors like creams, browns, grays and greens work well together. Keep lines simple and bring nature indoors. Add a natural wood headboard and side tables; separate spaces with Shoji doors; add paper lantern lighting—and always have some wheat grass hanging around.
